Gig Harbor Residence
The goal for this home was to create a serene retreat for the client’s weekend home in Gig Harbor, Washington. A place where their children and grandchildren could gather. We wanted to design a modest and functional home that was deeply connected to art and evoke a spirit of calm. The clients for the Gig Harbor residence are longtime friends and were one of the early collectors of Mutuus partner Saul’s artwork. It was natural when they asked us to craft a space for them, that the hand-crafted custom lighting, objects and materials would take center stage.
We celebrate patina and love seeing the hand of the maker in the spaces and the objects we design. The custom cabinets, lighting and hardware are all crafted from linen canvas artfully merge with the architecture.
Often subtle, we feel that there is a timeless beauty in designing spaces where all our senses are engaged. The way light bounces off a material changes the atmosphere of a space combined with the smell of the pacific northwest air along with the volume and proportions of a room all contribute to a calm restful home. The backsplash to the bar made from stainless steel panels were carefully hand torched giving it a warm golden glow. Mutuus made Dead City pendants illuminate the central bar made from linen and resin. The bar fronts and hardware are also linen and give a tactile quality and reveals the inherent beauty of the material.
